‘Encanto’ Singer Was Literally in Labor When She Recorded ‘Waiting on a Miracle’

Some of us are just built differently and Encanto star Stephanie Beatriz is one of those people. She recently revealed that when she recorded “Waiting on a Miracle” for the new Disney movie, she was in labor. Like literal childbirth labor.

Stephanie is an incredible actress and she’s an amazing singer we’ve learned, too. Stephanie voiced the character Mirabel in the super-popular film which was released in December. During the production of the movie, Stephanie was expecting her first baby and she was very, very pregnant when the time rolled around to record “Waiting on a Miracle.”

“I didn’t want to tell anybody at Disney because I didn’t want anyone to freak out,” she told Variety about how close she was to the end of her pregnancy.

“But I was already having some contractions when we were scheduled to record that day. I was like ‘Well, fingers crossed I finish the song before [the baby] comes!’”

Byron Howard, director of Encanto, told Variety that the crew knew that Stephanie was “very, very, very ready to have that baby,” but she didn’t tell them that she was in labor, she kept that to herself.

Her baby, a little girl she named Rosaline, was born the following day. “It is INCREDIBLE and HARD AF and BEAUTIFUL and EMOTIONAL, and I can’t remember ever being this amazed and feeling so overwhelmingly full of gratitude,” she wrote on Instagram in August when her daughter was born. “Roz, you are so cool.”

Now we don’t want to put too much emphasis on the fact that Stephanie worked through labor pains. There’s no expectation that people should work up until the second they give birth, and there never should be. But another aspect that makes this story jaw-dropping and oh so cool is that if you’ve ever carried a baby into the ninth month of pregnancy, you know that taking a breath can feel nearly impossible.

The fact that Stephanie was able to belt out a song as incredible as “Waiting on a Miracle” without passing out from lack of oxygen from a baby squished into her lungs is amazing. She killed this song – and we were already surprised that she has pipes like this – but imagine how amazingly she can sing if she has two lungs that can fully inflate?!

We’re in awe!
